Mistakes I've Made While Podcasting

It is important to remember that mistakes can happen in podcast recording and that no one is perfect.

Whether it is forgetting to hit the record button, an interruption, or a mistake such as a swear word slipping in, it is important to remember that mistakes can be corrected. If a mistake is noticed, it is possible to edit it out and re-upload the podcast.

In this episode, I let you in on some mistakes I have made and how I have gotten over them.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • How to learn from your mistakes
  • Why most podcast mistakes can be fixed
  • The importance of laughing at yourself

[00:00:00] Well, welcome back to the Mindset of podcasting. I cannot believe that I'm on episode 63. This goes really fast, like, we'll be at a hundred before we even know it. So today I wanted to have a little fun episode and let you know that we all make mistakes. So I'm gonna be talking about mistakes I've made while managing podcast.

[00:00:26] So, so I know this may be a. But I'm not perfect . None of us are, and we all make mistakes. So I hope that some of these mistakes that I'm going to tell you, these are mistakes I've made with my own podcast and mistakes I've made with a client's podcast, that you'll feel a little bit better that you know what things happen.

[00:00:48] So let's get into it.

[00:00:53] One of the things that I have done, especially with recording my own podcast, is I have one forgotten to hit three chord button, and I went through the entire podcast and then when I stopped, I went to get the recording and realized, it was never recording . So very first thing you wanna do is make sure that you have hit that record button.

[00:01:14] Some people do set it up in Zoom so that it automatically chords as soon as you go in there, which you can set up. But just make sure you hit the record button cuz having to redo it all over again is not fun. I actually just had to redo one of my other episodes cause I was trying out a new platform for recording.

[00:01:33] Because I was just trying to see if there was something different from than Zoom that I could possibly tell my clients about. So I tried it, and while it recorded the video of me, it recorded absolutely no audio. Even though my mic was hooked up, I knew my mic was working. I tested it before nothing, no audio at all.

[00:01:51] It was a completely silent clip. So that was fun to have to rerecord that too. So just know that sometimes technology doesn't work right, or sometimes we forget to do something and our episodes don't get recorded and we have to rerecord them. That does happen a lot, .

[00:02:10] Another thing that has happened is interruptions by recording. So this happens to me and my clients. I record at the local library. I'm there right now recording because my new place that I moved into is very noisy, . We live on a very busy street. So I come to the library to record, and the library has, if you're watching the video right now, you can see that it has the soundproofing stuff behind.

[00:02:34] But to enter it has these glass doors with glass windows around them. So anybody walking by can look in and see me. And I have had people come up and like put their hands around their eyes to look in at me while I'm recording. I've had people knock while I'm recording to ask what this room is and what it's about.

[00:02:53] I think that's really rude. But anyways, if you see somebody in there doing work, . Don't do that to them. Wait till they come out. Or ask somebody who works at the library what it is like, whatever, . But yes, lots of interruptions. My clients have had interruptions and you know, They just go with the flow. Kids have come in while they've recorded episodes, and I just edit those out.

[00:03:14] We need to remember, anything can be edited out. I've had, let's see, I've had a client who lived near train tracks, so every now and then a train would come by and she could hear the whistle a little bit away. So she'd be like, go, hold on, I gotta pause for the train, and you could hear the train. It was really loud,

[00:03:29] So, you know, we come through and as soon as it was done, she would pick up where she left off. I've had kids coming in, dogs barking, , husbands coming in, and interrupting. So there's lots of interruptions you can have, coughing, especially if they're sick and trying to record a podcast episode.

[00:03:53] . But yeah, there might always be interruptions that we can't control. But what I would do is if you do get an interruption, I would pause, wait till the interruption is over, and then repeat like the last thing you said. That way there's a good place to edit it and you don't have to worry about like trying to cut it together with the noise in there cuz it's really hard to do.

[00:04:13] I like when my clients like go back a little bit so that I can edit it in nicely and take out the interruptions. I have a client who they like to swear, but they are a non explicit podcast, so I have to beep out any swear words and I forgot to beep out the F word once. . I don't know how I forgot. Maybe it just flowed in the sentence.

[00:04:40] And yeah, they found out and I had to go fix that really quick after it aired, like one of the listeners told them, , that I forgot to do that. Luckily they weren't mad, they, no mistakes happen. I just went in, fixed it, re-uploaded it. So that's also something you can do. Like if you notice a mistake and you're recording, you can go in, fix it, and then re-upload it in your podcast host.

[00:05:01] It might take an hour or so to get out to all the platforms, but it will re-upload into all the platforms. I have had mistakes in show notes. So show notes are the little blurb under your podcast I wrote once I was ta talking about, , sleazy marketing tactic tactic. I was talking about sleazy marketing tactics and I wrote that.

[00:05:26] Are you tired of, oh, what did I write? Sorry. Hold on. I'm trying to think.

[00:05:39] Okay. Yeah, so in the show notes, we were talking about sleazy marketing tactics, and I wrote, are you tired of feeling sneezy with your marketing? And of course my autocorrect didn't catch it because sneezy is a word, and when I was reading it, you know how you know what the word is supposed to be so you don't catch it when you're reading it.

[00:06:03] So that episode went out talking about bead sneezy, and we caught it and I was able to fix it again. You can go in your show notes and fix and update anything, and I was able to fix it and it was re-uploaded to all the platforms . So all these mistakes can be fixed. I do wanna let you know that they can be fixed.

[00:06:38] It can be edited out. You do not need to worry about that. So I just wanna let you know that I just wanted to let you know that we all make mistakes. I'm gonna keep this episode really short. I could probably list a whole bunch of mistakes, but, um, , I won't do that to you. . one of my very first mistakes was not knowing that Apple Podcast can take a while to get your episodes out, and so I didn't put on Apple till the day we planned to launch not good because it takes a while and it took a whole nother, I think a week after I did that.

[00:07:07] So she launched. and it wasn't on Apple Podcast because I waited until the launch date to put it on there, cuz I did not know you had to put it on there sooner. So make sure you put on Apple, like release your first episode or your trailer and put it on Apple at least, I would say at least a week before, if not sooner.

[00:07:28] So that's up there one other mistake that I will tell you really quickly is, So I take clips outta my client's audio and make them into audiograms, like the graphic with the, a clip of the episode over it. And so I did that in my editing software and I kept the clip with the episode cuz usually you can mute the tracks and then download the clip and.

[00:07:54] You won't hear the other tracks, the ones that you muted. It'll just be the clip. Well, I forgot to mute the clip, so when I downloaded the entire episode, I was in a rush. I didn't listen to it before I uploaded it, which was my fault. I always listened to podcast episodes. Now, before I uploaded it, all my clients I listen to, and when the episode went out, you could hear the clip over the episode they were talking to at a time.

[00:08:22] So I quickly had to go in and quickly fix that. So I always listen to the episode before I upload it. Now, always listen to your episodes, make sure there's no like things in there, and you should be pretty good. But we all make mistakes. I wanna remind you of that. Just remember that. Just remember, you're not doing brain surgery, so nothing's urgent.

[00:08:42] Nothing's lifesaving. If you make a mistake, own up to it and fix it. That's what you do. So just wanted to record this quick episode, just to let you know that make you feel a little bit better. , yeah, reach out to me. I'd love to connect and talk with you.
